るり（エステティーク谷九店） 【英訳されてた記事】

　どうも、ルリです。noteで私の上げてきたもののうち、一部記事が英訳されていた。東宝特撮映画や寺田寅彦、中谷宇吉郎の作品の感想文が今のところ多い。試しに逆翻訳にかけても、元の意味とほぼ変わらぬクオリティの自然な文章になったうえ、ニュアンスも汲んでくれていたためAIの進化に感心した。
　1つ、私の英訳された記事の文章を抜き出してみよう。これは山本和久三『本覚寺の山門に立ちて』の感想文の一部である。下には日本語の原文も貼る。英訳版の方をネット検索や辞書なしでスラスラ読めたら、恐らく英語圏での生活は余裕だと思われる。知らないけど。とりあえず英語力チェックにいかがでしょうか。

　The description of America using Hongaku-ji as a consulate and hoisting the Stars and Stripes at the top of a tree in its precincts, along with the choice of the word ’koushi’ (the first arrow/the beginning), is very powerful. It easily conveys the vigor and boldness of America.
The forceful, drastic treatment of ending the approximately 215-year-long isolation (1639-1854) through Perry’s Convention of Kanagawa, followed by the start of free trade (with unequal treaties) under Harris’s Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1858, feels very American, and this expression is a fitting metaphor for such events.


Furthermore, the description that ’at that time, the waves of Tokyo Bay were lapping right up to the foot of the temple’ makes one feel that, even if this situation happened by chance, Japan was beginning to open its doors to the entire world across the sea.
At the same time, there is an undercurrent of unease and tension about waking from a long slumber and beginning to take on a role in the international community, and I think again that it is a very metaphorical scene.

　アメリカが本覚寺を領事館とし、その境内の木の天辺に星条旗を掲げる…という描写と、「嚆矢」という言葉選びは非常に雄勁である。アメリカの勢いの良さと豪快さを容易に感じさせる。
　1639年-1854年という、約215年間もの鎖国状態をペリーが日米和親条約によって解き、1858年にハリスによる日米通商修好条約にて自由貿易（不平等条約付き）を開始させる…という力ずくの荒療治は実にアメリカらしい印象ではあるものの、こうしたことを彷彿とさせる表現として妙を得ている。
　また、「其当時は寺の下まで東京湾の海波が満々と訪れてゐた」という描写は、偶然こうした事態が起こったにせよ、日本が開国し、海を越えた全世界へその門扉を開き始めることを感じさせる。
　同時に、長い眠りから覚め、国際社会の一翼を担い始めることへの不穏さや緊張感も漂っており、非常に暗喩めいた光景であると改めて思う。
